We've been having some issues with Mason's sleeping for a couple of years now. It started when he was two (2005) and hospitalized for dehydration brought on by strep. In an xray, his tonsils and adenoids were noticeably large. At the time he was under three and under 25 lbs. so we had to wait on doing anything about them.
Fast forward to April of 2007. He shared the guest room with my brother and had two episodes that Brad described as "he sounded like he was trying to swallow his tongue". He snorted and choked and Brad made him roll to his side. My mom told me this and two days later we were back at the ENT's office. Tonsils and adenoids were removed at the beginning of May. He seemed to be much better after that.
Now we're up to March 2008. I took Mason to the pediatrician for redness on his eyelid. We discussed nasal and breathing issues that seemed to be due to allergies. I explained that we felt that Mason had regressed; his snoring was back and he's hyperextending his neck when he sleeps. He looks ready to have CPR done on him, to give you a visual.
We've since had two sleep studies done. One polysonogram and a CPAP titatration (mask to sleep with). We also had a soft tissue xray redone that showed that HIS ADENOIDS HAVE GROWN BACK!! The pulmonologist concluded that he has sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome and that the CPAP helped to diminish the central apneas and the desaturations.
We're going to a pediatric ENT doctor tomorrow at VCU to see what the next step is. Please pray that she is who he needs and that she has the wisdom that we're looking for. I've learned some great mothering skills from some friends of mine who have had to navigate the hospitals/doctors with their children. I will do what I need to do to get what Mason needs at as little expense as possible to him. Let's just also pray that I'm polite, patient, graceful, and tactful while I'm at it....
